Luton Airport is 71% owned by TBI plc and the remaining 20% by Bechtel Enterprises Luton Ltd. TBI began as a South Wales real estate firm before acquiring Cardiff in 1995 and expanding into the acquisition and management of minor airports. The following airports are currently owned and operated by the corporation in the UK: Belfast, Cardiff, and London Luton. In addition to managing the terminal complex at Orlando Sanford, one of the busiest airports in the world, they also administer Bolivia and Skavsta airports in Sweden.
The Borough of Luton owned the land in 1938, which is when Luton Airport first opened. The Second World War fighter squadrons stayed at the airport quite quickly. The Percival Aircraft Company was founded after the war.
But in 1962, BPC Airways chose to make Luton airport its home, marking the turning point when Luton became a fully-fledged commercial airport. In 1972, Monarch began operating flights from Luton airport, along with the tour operator Clarksons and its airline Courtline. 20% of all travelers used Luton airport during these prosperous years. Unfortunately, the airport's reliance on the Clarksons led to its demise, and Luton Airport suffered as a result when the company went out of business. At the time, Clarksons was one of the major participants in the holiday market, and the collapse of the company caused a loss of confidence among the general public.
