On July 16, 1938, Luton Municipal Airport was inaugurated there by Kingsley Wood, the Secretary of State for Air. The airport is located on top of a hill, with a drop-off of about 40 meters (130 feet) near the western end of the runway, where the River Lea valley passes through the north-east end of the Chiltern Hills. The airport was thought of as the northern terminal for neighboring London and was owned by the Borough of Luton. The Royal Air Force utilized the airfield during World War II, with aircraft from No. 264 Squadron based there.
The location was given over to the local municipality when the war was over. An international airport servicing London, England is named London Stansted Airport.
